Ethical Research: Navigating the Institutional Review Board (IRB) Process for Graduate Students

Webinar Overview
This webinar will provide an overview of some of the concepts related to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and ways to ensure ethical conduct and protection of human subjects in research. It will also guide and support graduate students in the steps of both writing and preparing a successful IRB application and how to respond to IRB clarifications. Lastly, a review of the indications to submit an IRB modification and any additional documentation needed that often accompanies an IRB submission will be discussed.
Objectives
- Understand the significance and role of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) in ensuring ethical conduct and protection of human subjects in research.
- Navigate the IRB process through a step-by-step process of preparing and submitting an IRB application, including required documentation and timelines.
- Discuss ethical principles in research that guide IRB review, such as informed consent, confidentiality, and minimizing risks to participants.
- Provide guidance on how to interpret and respond to IRB feedback, including clarifications and modifications, and ensuring clarity and alignment with ethical standards.

Jennifer DiBenedetto is a T32 post-doctoral research fellow at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center/Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College conducting research related to burnout in nursing and primary care. She has had experience teaching Doctor of Nursing Practice Students at Regis College and is frequently involved in generating DNP projects and submitting to the IRB. She is also a nurse scientist at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, MA and works as a nurse practitioner in pediatrics in Northborough, MA.

Dr. Staci Sue Reynolds is an Associate Clinical Professor at Duke University School of Nursing in the USA. Dr. Staci Reynolds joined Duke in January 2016, with a joint position between Duke University School of Nursing and Duke University Hospital (DUH). At DUSON, Dr. Reynolds teaches in the ABSN Program (evidence-based practice) and DNP program (healthcare quality improvement methods). Clinically, she served as a neuroscience Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) for the inpatient neuro units at DUH for 3 years. In March 2019, she transitioned to being a CNS for the DUH Infection Prevention and Hospital Epidemiology department. Additionally, Dr. Reynolds coordinates the Duke Advancement of Nursing, Center of Excellence (DANCE) academic-practice partnership. She is also the faculty lead for the post-DNP Quality Implementation Scholars Program that began in May 2019. Before coming to DUSON, she was a neurocritical care nurse and a neuroscience Clinical Nurse Specialist at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital. Dr. Reynolds received a baccalaureate degree in nursing science from Indiana University (IU) in Indianapolis, Indiana. She earned a Master’s degree as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at IU in 2011 and completed her PhD at IU in May 2016. Dr. Reynolds’ dissertation focused on the implementation of clinical practice guidelines, and her current research interests include evidence-based practice implementation and quality improvement.

Dr. Veronica Rankin serves as a Director of Nursing Services in the role of Magnet Program Director for Atrium Health - Carolinas Medical Center Central Division, located in Charlotte, North Carolina. She also serves as the Administrator of the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) Program at this magnet-designated Level 1 Trauma Center. Dr. Rankin has been a nurse for more than 17 years and a certified CNL for more than 9 years. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree as well as her Postmasters certification as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner from East Carolina University. She earned her master’s as a CNL from Queens University of Charlotte in 2011. She serves as adjunct faculty for Queen’s University’s graduate nursing program and teaches CNL exam certification review sessions with CNL students regularly. As a published author and member of various professional organizations including Sigma International where she serves as treasurer of the Mu Psi Chapter, Dr. Rankin’s primary career goal is to promote and advance the profession of nursing.

Dr. Angie Hatley is an Associate Professor at the Presbyterian School of Nursing, Blair College of Health, teaching in the graduate and undergraduate programs. She has over eight years in higher education and has taught across programs, including general education. Dr. Hatley has served as the Chair of Graduate Studies in Nursing and is currently the MSN Track Coordinator for the MSN program. Dr. Hatley is a 2014 Doctor of Nursing Practice graduate from Regis University. Her doctoral studies focused on transitions in nursing practice and completed her scholarly project on Nurse Preceptor Development and the Impact on the Self-Efficacy of Newly Hired Nurses. She has practiced as a clinical nurse, educator, and/or administrator since 2001, following graduation from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. She earned a Master of Science in Nursing degree and a Graduate Certificate in Health Care Education from Regis University in 2008. Following licensure as a Registered Nurse, Dr. Hatley served in various clinical and nursing leadership roles for more than 15 years with Atrium Health in Charlotte.

Christy Haas-Howard oversees the development, execution, and evaluation of health initiatives related to the environment. She collaborates with the conservation and K-12 education teams to identify priority areas of common interest to maximize resources and impact. As an experienced health care provider, she tracks emerging trends in the health and environment space, recognizing and amplifying the opportunities to create greater health equity and environmental justice. Christy comes to NEEF with over 17 years as a registered nurse in the school setting. She has been asthma educator-certified since 2009 and has led various school-based asthma programs at the local and state level. She has also worked at the national level to cultivate an increase in school nurse’s knowledge and skills related to asthma care. Christy has presented and published on asthma and the upstream benefits of addressing environmental exposures and climate change. Her other previous projects include supporting a pilot air quality sensor network and health literacy project in Denver, CO, and implementing an air quality and asthma literacy Environmental Health Nurse Fellowship. Christy holds a BA in Economics from Claremont McKenna College, a BS in Nursing from Metropolitan State University, Denver, and a MPH from the Colorado School of Public Health. She enjoys gardening, playing games with her family, walking her dogs, and hiking in the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Using stories to teach is not a new strategy for helping students understand best practices in patient care in the Affective Domain. However, the use of Medical Readers Theatre is a relatively new concept to nursing as it uses stories and scripts from nontraditional sources, as well as involves student participation to read the story as the teaching points are made. The instructor facilitates discussion upon completion of the “play” to impress key principles of patient care that may be affected by bias, stereotyping, as well as attitudes, beliefs, and value systems of student learners. Join us for this webinar to uncover the power of narratives, the art of immersive learning, and the transformative potential in healthcare education.
Objectives:
- Discuss the importance of the affective domain in patient care.
- Identify the principles and strategies for utilizing Medical Readers Theatre to teach affective domain concepts.

Andrea Novak, PhD, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, FAEN

Dr. Andrea Novak is currently the Field Experience Coordinator and Adjunct Faculty for Aspen University. Her history in adult education spans over 30 years with most recently serving as an AHEC Nurse for about 23 years. Dr. Novak is a member of the NCNA Council on Gerontology and serves as a peer reviewer for NCNA’s CEAU Task Force as well as a Peer Reviewer for the Emergency Nurses Association Education Committee.
Her nursing background began as many of us did as a med-surg nurse which expanded to working in the emergency nursing arena and later as a nurse educator for a high-volume emergency department. Andrea is one of the North Carolina’s 100 Great Nurses, as well as a Fellow in the Academy of Emergency Nursing. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Emergency Nursing, the National AHEC Organization and currently on the Aspen Journal. A published author and national speaker, Dr. Novak also received training as a health literacy consultant through UNC Chapel Hill and developed a strong interest in both helping healthcare providers meet the literacy needs of their patients, especially those most vulnerable; the elderly. Dr. Novak holds a PhD in Public Health; community health and education from Walden University, two Masters Degrees, two bachelor degrees, and an ADN.
